Mindset Change
Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima noted that a significant portion of our challenges are not primarily related to resources, policies, or systems but rather stem from people’s general attitudes, values, beliefs, and norms, collectively forming the mindset. He believed that with the existing resources in Malawi, much more could be accomplished if the collective mindset shifted towards positivity. Dr. Chilima was convinced that mindset influences performance and that a growth mindset can overcome familial disadvantages.
In honour of this vision, the SKC Foundation will undertake various capacity development initiatives to empower the youth of Malawi to:
- Be involved: Participate in community projects aimed at improving welfare.
- Be transformative: Innovate to solve everyday problems using available resources.
- Be responsible: Reflect on questions such as “How much longer should our Motherland remain among the least developed countries in the world? What does it take to advance beyond this status?” (SKC – Mindset Change Lecture – 30 October 2020)
These goals will be achieved through programs that encourage youth to develop the following mindsets:
- A mindset of self-trust
- A goal-setting mindset
- A learning mindset
- A patience mindset
- A positive mindset
- A pragmatic and results-oriented mindset
Our objective is to eradicate the beggar mentality that has permeated all levels of society by offering capacity and skills-building programs in affected communities. The Foundation will motivate the youth to experiment with innovative problem-solving methods while promoting a code of conduct based on patriotism, integrity, and hard work.
Our focus areas for mindset change include:
- Patriarchy and the abuse of women and youth
- The role of socialization and culture
- The entitlement mentality
- The preference for white-collar jobs
